Allstate Adding 136 New Jobs in Ohio

January 3, 2013Email ThisPrintNewslettersTweetArticleComments

Allstate says it’s planning to add 136 new jobs in Ohio.

The insurance company said that it plans to appoint 12 new insurance-agency owners in Columbus and hire 36 licensed sales representatives for new and existing agencies in the region.

The Columbus Dispatch reports that remaining jobs will be throughout Ohio, including Cincinnati, Cleveland, Dayton and Akron.

State figures show Allstate was No. 3 in total auto-insurance premiums in Ohio 2011 and No. 2 in homeowners’ insurance premiums.

Mary Bonelli, spokeswoman for the Ohio Insurance Institute, says the new jobs Allstate is bringing to Ohio reflect an industry that will need insurance professionals in the years to come. About half of the state’s insurance work force is expected to turn over by 2025 as baby boomers retire.

October Disaster Loss at $1.08B: Allstate

November 28, 2012Email ThisPrintNewslettersTweetArticleCommentsAllstate Corp. expects to report October disaster losses of $1.08 billion, mostly due to superstorm Sandy, the home and auto insurer said on Wednesday.

Allstate, the largest publicly traded home and auto insurer in the country, said its gross losses were $1.28 billion but that it expected to recover about $200 million in reinsurance.

Two-thirds of the losses are in New York state, the insurer said, while 20 percent are in New Jersey and the rest are elsewhere. Allstate said it had already paid $340 million in claims as of last Monday.

Sandy is expected to be the second-costliest disaster in U.S. history, behind only Hurricane Katrina. Industry experts estimate insured losses of as much as $25 billion, excluding any claims paid by the federal flood insurance program.

Allstate’s Sandy losses are not as severe, though, as the $1.4 billion hit the company took from tornadoes in April 2011.

Allstate Agents Returning to Massachusetts After 25 Years

October 5, 2012Email ThisPrintNewslettersTweetArticle3 Comments

Allstate Insurance Co. is reopening brick-and-mortar offices in Massachusetts after a quarter century of absence.

Back in 1987, the Northbrook, Ill.-headquartered Allstate closed its offices in Massachusetts and pulled out of the market, citing the state’s strict regulation of auto insurance rates.

But Massachusetts’ regulatory environment has been changing in recent years. In 2008, the state began implementing “managed competition” and took steps to deregulate private passenger auto insurance rates.

This move to managed competition has brought a number of insurers — including GEICO and Progressive — to the state’s auto insurance market. Allstate started to again offer private passenger auto insurance in the state in 2009 — through its agents from neighboring states (including Connecticut, New Hampshire and Rhode Island) as well as through an 800 number (1-800-Allstate).

Allstate Plans ‘Aggressive Ramp-Up’ in Massachusetts

Now, with the opening of new offices, Allstate is expanding its business in earnest. The company says it is planning an “aggressive ramp-up” in coming years.

On Monday, Oct. 1, Allstate opened an office in North Andover, a suburb of Boston. It’s the company’s first brick-and-mortar office in Massachusetts in 25 years. At least two more offices are scheduled to open in the state before the end of the year.
