December Enforcement Brings 1,300 DWI Arrests in Minnesota

December 20, 2012Email ThisPrintNewslettersTweetArticle1 Comments

Minnesota’s Department of Public Safety says about 1,300 people have been arrested for driving while intoxicated so far in December.

State law enforcement agencies are working overtime hours this month as part of a campaign to prevent drunken driving tragedies. That’s accompanied by a statewide advertising campaign to notify Minnesotans of the added patrols.

In the previous three Decembers, 28 people total were killed in crashes caused by drunk drivers. In all, over the last five years, 651 people were killed in such crashes.

The Department of Public Safety urges Minnesotans to plan ahead on nights where drinking will be involved by designating a sober driver or using public transportation. They also ask people to report suspected drunk drivers by calling 911, and to take precautionary measures by buckling up.

May 14, 2012Email ThisPrintNewslettersTweetArticle1 Comments

A Mother’s Day checkpoint in Louisiana’s Calcasieu Parish ended in five arrests for driving while intoxicated. Law enforcement officers also issued multiple citations for other offenses.

Louisiana State Police Troop D, with assistance from the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office, conducted a DWI checkpoint on U.S. Highway 90 east of Lake Charles on May 13, according to the Louisiana State Police.

In addition to the five DWI arrests, troopers issued two citations for an open alcoholic beverage container, three for an expired motor vehicle inspection decal, two for driving without a driver’s license, one for driving an unregistered vehicle, four for driving under suspension, two for no seat belt, one for improper vehicle equipment, and one for failure to obey a police officer.

Last year, Troop D investigated 18 fatal crashes resulting in 20 fatalities. Of those 20 fatalities, 10 were killed by impaired drivers (alcohol and/or drugs).

The Louisiana State Police as well as other area law enforcement agencies have additional DWI checkpoints planned throughout the year.
