October 4, 2012Email ThisPrintNewslettersTweetArticleComments

The Association of British Insurers is urging a review of the regulations for younger (17 to 24 year-old) drivers, including some new strictures that would require “a minimum one year learning period, restrictions on night time driving and lowering the alcohol limit for driving.”

The ABI said the changes are needed to “reduce the high crash risk young drivers face and to lower their motor insurance costs.” The ABI’s report  – Improving the Safety of Young Drivers – points out that only one in eight licensed drivers in the UK “are aged 25 or under, yet one in three who die on our roads is aged under 25. An 18 year-old driver is more than three times as likely to be involved in a crash than a 48 year-old driver.”

U.S. Calls $2M NYC Deal Largest Fair Housing Act Settlement Ever

May 10, 2012Email ThisPrintNewslettersTweetArticleComments

The federal government has announced that a settlement with a New York City landlord will result in more than $2 million being paid to tenants who were sexual harassment victims.

U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara announced the deal Tuesday. He called it the largest recovery ever in a sexual harassment suit brought by the United States under the Fair Housing Act.

A 2010 lawsuit had blamed the building’s owner for failing to stop a superintendent from demanding sex in exchange for rent reductions. It said the superintendent withheld the delivery of mail and apartment repairs and threatened the tenants with eviction when his sexual demands were refused.

The lawsuit said the superintendent, a registered sex offender, had worked at buildings on the Upper West Side for more than eight years.

Calls Show Residents Panicked Over Colorado Wildfire

April 4, 2012Email ThisPrintNewslettersTweetArticleComments

A man who was found dead in his burned home was among the confused and panicked residents who called Colorado authorities as a wildfire raged near them.

Police tapes obtained by KMGH-TV show that Sam Lucas expressed surprise after responders told him the fire was a controlled burn, despite winds that reached 80 mph. Lucas and his wife were found dead at their home last week.

Another resident urged authorities to rescue a woman who apparently died in the fire. A friend of Ann Appel was concerned for her safety because she was being treated for cancer.

The Colorado State Forest Service has accepted responsibility for the fire, which charred 6 square miles in a mostly rural, mountainous area southwest of Denver.
