Lockton Expands Financial Services Team in Kansas City

Privately held insurance broker, Lockton, recently expanded its global financial services team with the hiring of Michael Born in Kansas City.

Born joins the company as vice president providing expertise in the areas of data security, privacy liability, media and specialty errors and omissions insurance. He is a member of Lockton’s Global Technology and Privacy Practice.

With 20 years of experience in the professional liability insurance industry, Born most recently held the position of senior vice president and manager of Underwriting at ThinkRisk Underwriting Agency LLC. Prior to his tenure at ThinkRisk, he held key positions with Axis Pro Insurance, Media Professional, Zurich American, and American Family Insurance. Born also spent five years in private legal practice focusing on insurance related matters.

Ex-Cadets Seek Sanctions Against Kansas Military School

Former cadets of a Kansas military school have asked a federal judge to impose sanctions and order the school to release information about prior complaints, records and lawsuits they say would show a pattern of abuse.

Tuesday’s filing is part of an ongoing lawsuit by 11 students and their families against St. John’s Military School in Salina. The students sued earlier this year, contending the school’s quasi-military cadet program, which gives higher-ranking cadets the power to discipline students, encourages physical and mental abuse. The lawsuit claims the cadet program not only fails to prevent but also tacitly encourages violent acts among students.

St. John’s has vehemently denied culture of abuse exists at the school and has vowed to fight the lawsuit.

The latest legal dustup comes as the sides prepare for the October 2013 trial.

The plaintiffs contend the school has repeatedly refused to provide information about prior similar incidents, as well as certain internal documents and financial data. It is seeking internal reports regarding complaints of abuse, nurse assessments of student injuries, photographs or video depicting hazing or harassment.

Probe Prompts Kansas Inflatables Company to Cancel Jobs

Several parents were caught off guard when two Wichita, Kan., companies that provide inflatable rides canceled reservations at the last minute.

Last June, Moonwalks for Fun’s license to provide inflatable rides was suspended for two years because of a five-month gap in liability insurance coverage, but The Wichita Eagle reported on May 3 that it appears the company has continued to rent inflatables to city residents.

Pure Entertainment, an events venue, is allowed to have inflatables at its site, but the rides must be provided by a company licensed to operate in Wichita. The companies started calling customers after the newspaper reported they were being investigated by the city for possible ordinance violations.

Both companies are owned by Duane Zogleman and run on a day-to-day basis by his son, Jesse Zogleman.

In 2010, a 5-year-old Wichita boy died after falling from an inflatable ride and hitting his head on a concrete floor. The ride was provided by Moonwalks for Fun at Pure Entertainment. Late last year, the boy’s mother received a $435,000 settlement in a lawsuit she filed against Moonwalks for Fun.

An hour after the newspaper posted its story about the city’s investigation on its website, the Young family got a call from Moonwalks for Fun, saying their daughter’s 4th birthday party at Pure Entertainment would not include inflatable rides.
