Judge Says Michigan Car Insurance Fund Records Are Public

January 4, 2013Email ThisPrintNewslettersTweetArticleComments

An insurance fund that slaps a fee on every Michigan car to pay for catastrophic injuries suffered in accidents has been ordered to open its books and demonstrate how it sets the annual rate.

The decision by an Ingham County judge could shed more light on the Michigan Catastrophic Claims Association, which was created by the Legislature to reimburse insurance companies for claims that exceed $500,000.

Michigan’s no-fault insurance law provides unlimited lifetime coverage for medical expenses tied to auto wrecks. Michigan drivers now pay $175 per car per year – a sum that’s up 67 percent since 2008 – on top of other charges by their insurer.

Forecasters: Arkansas Records 11th Twister of Year

June 7, 2012Email ThisPrintNewslettersTweetArticleComments

Forecasters say storms that swept Arkansas on June 3 and 4 included at least one tornado, which touched down southwest of Carlisle in Lonoke County.

A storm survey team couldn’t find damage, but photographs taken during the storm indicated it touched down in farm fields near Arkansas Route 13. The tornado was the 11th in Arkansas this year. Last year, more than six dozen twisters hit the state. Back in 1997, Arkansas saw 107 twisters.

John Robinson of the National Weather Service office at North Little Rock said that forecasters in Memphis, Tenn., had yet to confirm tornadoes in northeastern Arkansas from Sunday night. Straight-line winds Sunday caused damage at Batesville and Shirley.

Robinson characterized the Carlisle-area storm as a landspout, which can occur in Arkansas on warm, humid days.

County in Iowa Warns Residents of Records Breach

May 14, 2012Email ThisPrintNewslettersTweetArticleComments

Some 3,000 Warren County, Iowa, residents have been notified that their personal information may have been scattered by the wind in the aftermath of a December fire at a human services office.

Pat Penning, service area manager for the Department of Human Services region that includes Warren County, said it is unlikely the water-logged or burned records could be used for identity theft, but the state is treating the breach seriously.

Utah Medical Records Breach More Extensive

April 9, 2012Email ThisPrintNewslettersTweetArticleComments

Health officials in Utah say hackers who downloaded thousands of medical files from state computers last week stole far more personal information than originally thought.

The Utah Department of Health said Friday that nearly 182,000 recipients of Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program had their personal information stolen. The department estimates more than 25,000 Social Security numbers were compromised.

Agency officials originally thought the hackers stole 24,000 Medicaid claims. But officials now say 24,000 files were stolen, and each file potentially contains information on hundreds of people.

Officials say the attack started last week and likely came from eastern Europe. The information was on a new server that had security tools installed improperly.

The agency says it plans to reach out to those affected and offer free credit monitoring services for one year.
