Willis North America Appoints Gilliam as Senior VP in Houston Office

Insurance broker Willis North America has appointed Bill Gilliam as senior vice president, construction practice, in its Willis of Texas office.

Willis of Texas Inc., with 120 associates, serves clients from its office in Houston.

In this role, Gilliam will be responsible for business development within Willis’ Construction Practice. He will work to expand Willis’ footprint in the Houston marketplace and align Willis’ global resources to deliver outstanding risk management services to Houston-based construction firms.

Gilliam reports to Lloyd Esler, managing partner, Willis of Houston.

Gilliam brings more than nine years of experience in the construction and insurance industries into this role. Prior to joining Willis, he served as a producer at Bowen Miclette and Britt Inc.

XL Group Appoints Northeast Manager for North America Property Team

XL Group plc’s North America property business appointed Joseph Moylan as its Northeast regional manager. Based in New York, Moylan will serve property insurance clients throughout the Northeast. He reports to Michele Sansone, Eastern Zone executive in XL’s North America property team.

Moylan joins XL Group from Axis Capital, were he served as senior vice president and regional manager and most recently built a new middle market property underwriting unit in the Northeast. He brings more than 30 years of underwriting property and inland marine risks for Zurich Insurance Company, Home Insurance Company, AIG, and William H. McGee & Co., among others.

Conn.-Based Business Risk Partners Appoints Senior Underwriter

Business Risk Partners (BRP), a Windsor, Conn.-based managing general underwriter, appointed Jayne Downey as a senior underwriter overseeing the firm’s technology errors-and-omissions (E&O) and data breach/privacy products.

For over a decade, Downey worked as an underwriter with Chubb Specialty Insurance in its wholesale unit where she helped launch Chubb’s cyber products and managed underwriting for the western region. Her experience also includes E&O underwriting for miscellaneous professional liability, media, and lawyers.

Founded in 2000, BRP is a managing general underwriter in specialty insurance. It partners with global carriers and specialty agents and brokers nationwide to offer services for middle-market customers. BRP provides professional and management liability products to agents and brokers and their clients.

Alterra Appoints Chief Claims Officer in New York

Alterra Capital Holdings Limited recently appointed Nicholas Conca to the newly created position of chief claims officer, insurance. Conca, based in New York City, will start his new position in November.

Conca has more than 20 years of insurance industry experience, including many years of direct or managerial involvement with insurance claims operations. He was most recently executive vice president of U.S. operations for Integro Insurance Brokers, and was previously with Crystal & Co., Liberty International and Reliance National.

Conca began his career at the law firm of Wilson Elser Edelman Moskowitz & Dicker, where he served as claims counsel to major insurance companies.

Alterra Capital Holdings Limited, headquartered in Bermuda, provides diversified specialty insurance and reinsurance products to corporations, public entities, and property/casualty insurers in North America, Europe, and internationally. The company had $158 million net profit for the first half of 2012.

ACE USA Appoints Executive Officer for Northeast Region

ACE USA, the U.S.-based retail operations of the ACE Group, appointed Mitchell Schmidt as senior vice president and regional executive officer for ACE USA’s Northeast region.

Schmidt will be based in Boston, and will be responsible for setting and driving the overall strategic direction for ACE USA’s Northeast region. He will work collaboratively with the Northeast regional team to oversee all business development, retention and underwriting activities, establish distribution strategies, and service delivery to middle and large account commercial customers. He will report to Ed Zaccaria, division president of ACE USA’s regional operations.

Karen Sothern, who has served as senior vice president and regional executive officer for ACE USA’s Northeast region since 2002, now assumes a new global role as change management officer for acquisitions, for the ACE Group, reporting to Evan Greenberg, chief executive officer of ACE Limited.

With more than 15 years in the insurance industry, Schmidt most recently served as senior vice president and national underwriting manager of ACE USA’s custom casualty and public entity units. He has held several senior underwriting positions at ACE, including serving as Western Zone manager, with responsibility for the excess liability and custom casualty product offerings for five of the nine ACE USA regions.

Schmidt joined ACE in 2003 from Chubb Insurance Group, where he held several branch and regional casualty management and underwriting positions, including Midwest regional excess casualty manager.

ACE Appoints Ashley, Henderson, Cassidy to Bermuda Reinsurance Unit

ACE has announced three appointments in its ACE Tempest Re Bermuda reinsurance unit: Wayne Ashley as Chief Underwriting Officer, International; Graeme Henderson as Vice President, International; and Darin Cassidy as Vice President, USA. All will be based in Hamilton, Bermuda.

Ashley will have responsibility for ACE Tempest Re Bermuda’s business with primary insurers outside of North America and will report to Tim Mardon, Division President, ACE Tempest Re Bermuda., Ashley, who has nearly 18 years of experience in the industry, joined ACE Tempest Re Bermuda in 2006 as Assistant Vice President, International, and was promoted to Vice President in 2009 and Senior Vice President earlier this year. He formerly was with Alea London, where he underwrote the International treaty portfolio. He began his career in London at Zurich Re in 1994 in the Reinsurance Treaty unit.

Henderson, who will report to Ashley, will join ACE from Axis Reinsurance Company, where he has been since 2005, most recently as an Underwriter for the International business in Bermuda. He previously worked for Marsh Global Markets in Bermuda. Henderson is a Bermudian.  He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from McGill University in Montreal and holds the Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU), Associate in Reinsurance (ARe) and Certified Catastrophe Risk Analyst (CCRA) designations.

Cassidy, who has been promoted within the USA unit, will continue to report to Brock Webel, Chief Underwriting Officer, USA Property Catastrophe and Specialty lines. He joined ACE Tempest Re Bermuda in 2004 as a catastrophe analyst, then moved to the USA underwriting team in 2008 and was promoted to Assistant Vice President in 2010. He is also a Bermudian, and received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Public Relations and Advertising and an MBA from the University of Central Florida.

AXIS Appoints Butt to Replace Charman as Chairman

Bermuda-based AXIS Capital Holdings Limited announced that its Board of Directors has appointed Board member and former Chairman Michael A. Butt as non-executive Chairman of the Board of Directors.

He succeeds John R. Charman following the decision by the Board to replace him as Chairman. “Butt had served successfully as AXIS Capital’s chairman for almost ten years prior to the recent appointment of Mr. Charman to that position,” said the bulletin, adding that Butt “assures a thorough understanding of the role and priorities to be carried out by the Chairman of AXIS Capital.”

Mcgraw Appoints Cohen CEO

Menlo Park, Calif.-based McGraw Group of Affiliated Cos., which includes Pacific Specialty Insurance Company (PSIC), named Brian Cohen chief executive officer. Cohen’s appointment is effective immediately.

Cohen joins McGraw from Strategic Growth Advisors where he was president and CEO, serving companies in the technology, financial services and insurance industries. Prior to SGA, Cohen led the turnaround of global software company Clear Technology. He previously worked at Farmers Insurance as the senior vice president and chief marketing officer.

Greenlight Re Appoints Drake as VP-Business Development

Cayman Islands-based Greenlight Capital Re, a specialist property and casualty reinsurer, has appointed John H. Drake, Jr. as Vice President, Business Development. He will be responsible for maintaining productive client and broker relationships while also identifying attractive new business opportunities, and will be based at the Company’s headquarters in the Cayman Islands.

Brendan Barry, Chief Underwriting Officer at Greenlight Re, welcomed Drake to the company, noting his “experience and a deep understanding of our industry from his years in underwriting,” and his “established relationships and appreciation for the role of business development in a customer-centric reinsurance company.”

Drake has more than 20 years of insurance industry experience and a background that includes underwriting, sales and marketing. He joins Greenlight Re from Swiss Re Corporate Solutions, where he was most recently Vice President, Sales Force Effectiveness Team, and previously served as Vice President, Marketing for Swiss Re Underwriters Agency, Inc.

The bulletin stated that during his time with Swiss Re, Drake “developed and maintained broad property & casualty reinsurance broker relationships, and generated new business opportunities across all business lines.” He previously held underwriting management positions at OneBeacon Professional Partners, HartRe Company, and Chubb Specialty Insurance.

Drake is a Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) and Associate of Reinsurance (ARe). He also holds a Bachelors Degree from Union College, and is an MBA candidate at Babson College’s F.W. Olin Graduate School of Business.
