Connecticut Archdiocese Sues Insurer Over Misconduct Payments

The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Hartford, Connecticut, says its insurer has failed to cover more than $1 million the archdiocese paid out in recent years to settle four sexual misconduct cases involving priests.

The archdiocese filed a federal lawsuit last week against Interstate Fire and Casualty Company of Chicago. The lawsuit says the insurer was supposed to reimburse claims that exceed $200,000, but has failed or refused to make payments to the archdiocese.

An attorney for the archdiocese says the insurer owes the archdiocese more than $1 million.

A spokeswoman says the insurer doesn’t comment on pending lawsuits.

Connecticut Insurance Department Names New Captive Manager

Connecticut Insurance Commissioner Thomas Leonardi today announced that John C. Thomson, a veteran risk management specialist, will manage the new captive insurance regulatory unit.

Commissioner Leonardi said Thomson brings a strong, diverse background in risk management and that he will be a valuable asset in the department’s regulation of the growing captive industry in Connecticut.

The commissioner made the appointment announcement today during the Captive Insurance Education Symposium at the Bushnell Center for the Performing Arts, in Hartford, Conn. The event was sponsored by the Connecticut Insurance & Financial Services Cluster and the newly formed Connecticut Captive Insurance Association.

Thomson began his new position Sept. 28. Prior to joining the insurance department, Thomson was an editor for International Risk Management Institute, the publisher of Captive Insurance Company Reports.

Thomson also was the chief operating officer for energy industry captive, Oil Casualty Insurance, Ltd., and has held leadership positions with General Electric, Aetna, Cigna and Towers Perrin/Tillinghast, a Hartford risk management firm.

Connecticut Moving Ahead With New Health Care Exchange

Connecticut officials are pushing ahead with plans to set up the new health insurance exchange, a marketplace where individuals and businesses can find affordable coverage, by next fall.

The federal Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services last week awarded the state a $107 million grant. It was the latest allotment from the federal government as part of President Barack Obama’s health care overhaul law. To date, the state has now received a total of $116 million.

Connecticut is one of a handful of states to have received a so-called Level-Two Establishment Grant. It joins Washington, Rhode Island, Maryland, Nevada and Vermont.
