Bingham Launches Public Interest Fellowship With LAFLA

Press Release

LOS ANGELES (May 29, 2013) — Bingham announced today that it will fund a two-year public interest fellowship with Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles (LAFLA), one of the nation’s most prominent and respected legal-service organizations.

“This program enables Bingham to support an organization with a rich history of dedication and service to Southern California,” said Bingham Chairman Jay Zimmerman.

LAFLA is a nationally recognized and respected public service organization that has been providing civil legal services to poor and low-income people in Southern California for over 80 years.

“We have a very strong relationship with LAFLA and have worked with the organization for more than a decade,” said Debra Fischer, a partner in Bingham’s Los Angeles office and a member of the firm’s national Pro Bono Committee and LAFLA’s executive board. “The organization advocates on behalf of individuals in the core areas of interest for Bingham’s pro-bono practice, including children’s rights. We are happy to be partnering with LAFLA on this fellowship.”

The recipient of the LAFLA fellowship is Jeanne Nishimoto, who has been working with LAFLA as a staff attorney in its Government Benefits Unit since 2012. Nishimoto will focus on advocating for benefits on behalf of the relatives of children attempting to receive aid under Federal foster care programs. In California, state foster care aid is not available to relatives caring for a child, so qualifying for Federal aid is critical.

“Thanks to the Bingham fellowship I can concentrate on helping relatives of at risk children receive foster care benefits,” said Nishimoto. “This fellowship enables LAFLA to better serve the community by keeping families together and improving the lives of many vulnerable children throughout the region.”

Nishimoto will also train Bingham lawyers on foster care issues and serve as the coordinating counsel for cases that Bingham lawyers work on.

“Bingham has been extremely supportive of the efforts of LAFLA,” said Silvia Argueta, Executive Director of LAFLA. “We are incredibly grateful for their continued support and look forward to working with them to provide assistance to needy children and their families.”

The funding for the Bingham fellowships is derived from attorneys’ fees awarded to Bingham for its work on various pro bono matters. In 2012 Bingham introduced two similar, three-year fellowships with Bay Area Legal Aid, the San Francisco Bay Area’s largest poverty law firm, and New York Lawyers for the Public Interest (NYLPI), which advances equality and civil rights, with a focus on health justice, disability rights and environmental justice. In 2013, Bingham plans on establishing an additional fellowship program in Washington D.C.

Bingham offers a broad range of market-leading practices focused on global financial services firms and Fortune 100 companies. The firm has more than 1,000 lawyers in 14 locations in the U.S., Europe and Asia. Follow the firm on Twitter

Louisiana Insurance Department Launches New Online Rate Comparisons

December 21, 2012Email ThisPrintNewslettersTweetArticleComments

Insurance Commissioner Jim Donelon says his department’s new online system will make it easier for Louisiana residents to shop for the best insurance rates in their cities.

The auto insurance guide launched Dec. 17 compares quotes for a 2004, 2007 or 2010 Toyota Camry driven by people of different ages, with different driving records. The homeowners’ guide compares quotes for a brick house that’s less than one year old or 5, 15 or 25 years old, at varying levels of coverage.

Take a 25-year-old house with $75,000 in building coverage, $37,500 for contents, a 2 percent hurricane deductible and a $500 deductible for all other peril. The 46 quotes for New Orleans, range from $596 to $3,370, with only four below $1,000. In Shreveport, 45 quotes for that scenario went from $466 to $1,184, with only five for more than $900.

Nikon launches WR-10 radio-frequency camera trigger system in US

Jan 8, 2013 at 02:00:00 GMT ACCESSORY NEWS CAMERA-TRIGGER NIKON Share: Tweet Pin It Print view Email

Nikon US has announced a radio-frequency camera triggering system compatible with all its current DSLRs. The WR-10 system works over a 60m range and, unlike the current infrared system, does not require a line-of-sight between the trigger and the camera. Users of mass-market Nikons (D600 and below) can use the WR-T10 transmitter to focus or fire cameras with WR-R10 receivers attached to them. Owners of pro-grade DSLRs with 10-pin connectors can use the WR-A10 adapter to connect the R10 to their camera. This combination allows the camera to act as a host that can remotely trigger up to 64 other cameras.

The system was released in Europe in November, alongside the D5200.

November 28, 2012Email ThisPrintNewslettersTweetArticleComments

The Ohio Insurance Institute (OII) announced it has launched www.InsuranceCareers.org, a new website dedicated to providing information on the variety of career opportunities within the insurance industry.

The OII, a property/casualty insurance trade association, said its primary goal is to help Ohioans achieve a better understanding of insurance.
